Color Series AKA No Puppets Allowed – Aged 5 Years by AJ Fernandez

6.5×48

Nicaraguan Puro

All the tobaccos used in this Nicaraguan puro were grown at AJ’s farm in Esteli, Nicaragua.

Believe it or not, this is the first Nicaraguan cigar in the Color Series. The industry may hate us—you’re aware of that, right? If it weren’t for the cease and desist from a certain puppet company, we’d have faced a choice: change the branding or confront the titans of our industry head-on. And frankly, I’ve got no problem doing that. Most of these giants have grown complacent, their only real gripe being that we’re shaking up their cozy little gold mines of mediocre cigars with high price tags.

But here we are. This “character” would have started with a “B.” It’s a Nicaraguan puro, aged for 4.5 years, and while factory-aged, it still carries sharp, distinct flavors with a deeply satisfying palate. I’m thrilled to bring you this gem as part of the Color Series, AKA No Puppets Allowed.

Once part of a limited-edition release tied to the season, this cigar was made by AJ Fernandez, but not for a brand under his name. Originally retailing for $16, I’m proud to offer you another aged treasure in this collection.

Description

Tasting Notes

Body: Soft cocoa butter
Foot: Rich red tobacco and rice wine vinegar
Cold Draw: Cocoa butter, hazelnut, chocolate

First Third
Rich cocoa, cocoa butter, hazelnut, vanilla extract, fresh-cut cedar, and chocolate with hints of dried thyme and a touch of black pepper. The smoke is creamy and luxurious. On the retrohale, you get notes of bread crust, black pepper, cream, and dried herbs, almost like biting into an herb-crusted bread seasoned with thyme and a hint of cocoa butter. There’s a sudden appearance of cumin, and the black pepper evolves into a more robust red pepper.

Second Third
Red pepper continues its journey, mingling with chocolate, cream, cocoa, dried apples and mangos, and a tangy freeze-dried raspberry kick.

Final Third
Sweet cedar takes over, with red pepper on the retrohale, cream, cayenne on the finish, and hints of herbs and dried fruit, with a slight touch of espresso rounding out the profile.

Pairing Suggestions: Red birch beer, rum, Nutella, Goobers, brownies, focaccia bread, Italian food, red pepper flakes, and pizza.
