If you have been a member of the club for about a year or more, you remember Archive. To recap, Archive is a group of Japanese whiskey lovers that go around the world curating and distilling private barrels. About 5 years ago, they delved into the art of cigar and whiskey pairing. Since then, they have made contacts with some of the best cigar manufacturers in the world. I’m talking about AJ, Raices, EPC and the list goes on. One of them joined Privada about 3 years ago. We spoke online for some time and then they revealed an opportunity. They wanted to start curating and aging cigars for specific barrels of whiskey. The issue was taxes and costs. Getting cigars into Japan is majorly expensive. So we made a deal, every once in a while they would extend opportunities to me to pick up the slack and take the bulk of the cigars. All I have to do is pay for them and import them. After the last release broke the internet, I have been patiently waiting. This happens once, maybe twice a year, and the last run had too few cigars for us. So when I got this call I knew I would be a hero! I aim to serve you all the best cigars in the world, and I think we just found a winner.

Description

Tasting Notes: Leather, sandalwood, tobacco… wow, this thing is unique already. The foot is oats, sandalwood, and some sort of botanical. This is all reminding me of fancy colognes. The cold draw is leather, botanical and floral, peat moss, and cinnamon heat. On the first third, I get honey, wheat, fresh-cut Spanish cedar, slight acidity, browned wheat toast, the most beautiful floral notes, and slight cinnamon. A perfect stimulation of palate with nothing to complain about, phantom flavors of peanut butter and light roast coffee. The retro is cinnamon, leather, sandalwood, and cedar…yes double woods. Powdery smoke. Hits on all senses. MAGIC! There’s a sweet acidity on each puff that reminds me of biting into a crisp apple. That is followed by a beautiful wood which I will call Spanish cedar, the smoke is powdery but not dry, it stimulates the palate perfectly. The retro is toasted almonds and phantom coconut shavings, with a nice warm cinnamon. Further in there is leather and lemon. WOW. The second third brings a phantom flavor of pancakes. For real. It’s still got the powdery smoke with the light roast coffee acidity. It’s got cinnamon flavor, but not so much spice anymore. It’s here and gone. The finish is clean. There are notes of a lot of things toasted in this cigar. There are also bright notes of florals. I’m already having trouble telling the difference between flavors, which tells me the blend is married together quite well. It’s yellow and floral, getting creamy in halfway with smooth light, and balanced flavors. This is a masterful cigar. Baking spices, florals, and woods. Puffs of vanilla and cedar. Pancake batter and cinnamon. The cinnamon picks up in the final third, along with the nicest cedar ever. It’s smooth and balanced with peanut butter creamy smoke. It may be one of the best Habanos we have seen. It leaves a cinnamon finish. It has melded flavors that you cannot pick apart otherwise. The retro is spicy with more cedar and cinnamon. This is another hit from Japanese Archive cigars.

Pairing Notes: From what I have been told, the closest thing you can pair this with to what they created it for would be a Hibiki Harmony or Cragganmore Scotch. Non-alcoholic beverages could be floral teas with honey. Check out our Tea Keepers selections flavors like apricot, in the coffee section of our website. Try dried fruits with this cigar, like apricot and pear. Peach tea. Seafood. Butterscotch. Rice pudding with cinnamon.

Great cigar. It opens with leather and earth. Then a subtle sweetness that never quits. Cedar comes in and acts as the backdrop to a few interesting flavors that come and go. The sweetness, which is like a honey, caramel or maybe vanilla, is always there for you on the finish and lingers until your next draw. For me, this is what made the cigar a standout.

My personal pick for Privada Cigar of the Year 2021. There is a floral essence and a smooth smoke texture that i really loved. Sipped on some blended Japanese Whiskey that also had the sweet and floral notes with a smoothness to it. It was a well rounded experience and had a great night with my friends. You know that overall good experience. (i ordered 5 more to repeat next summer)

Very floral notes and mixture of spice and toast. Definitely something to sit and enjoy all the flavors. The transitions flowed nicely and suprised me with how much the flavors changed. True privada pick

What an exquisite cigar! No wonder why it is out of stock so quickly. Light notes of honey, cinnamon, leather. I paired with a Driftless Glen bourbon aged in sherry casks and was wonderful.
