A few years ago Clark and several friends went on a cigar journey to the Dominican Republic.  They had an epic trip.  They got to meet Eladio Diaz, the master blender for Davidoff and Chico Rivas.  They also met some of the young, up-and-coming blenders who were learning form the masters we mentioned.  One of those young men drove a Harley Davidson, which you do not see every day in the DR.  His name is Marcos Rodriguez, and about 5 years ago he spent a ton of money he earned on creating his own cigar brand.  He knew he could sell his cigars in various cigar shops across the island and hoped one day he would even be able to sell in America.  He recalls spending almost every dime he had, and without one single order on hand.  He said something told him to make the cigars and the rest would take care of itself.  Clark purchased a bunch of his cigars and brought them back.  Each one was better than the next.  I smoked the Capo Habano that was in our box last year and went nuts.  We found his number and got those in the club right away.  Over time, Marcos sent me other samples, and this is one that really spoke to me.  It’s called the Burnot, and it’s named after a mythical figure featured in the band art.  Mr. Burnot is a voodoo legend that drags people into the underworld for never relaxing and enjoying life.  Smoking a cigar a day is true way to keep Mr. Burnot away.  So here we go.  The Burnot has been aged over 3 years and was waiting to be smoked by you.

Description

Body: Leather, a bit of Tootsie Roll, and a barnyard note.
Foot: Raisins and teriyaki.
Cold Draw: Rich tobacco and wood.

Tasting Notes: The first puffs show oily smoke that is deep and dark, with notes of black coffee with lots of sugar, oak, black pepper, beef jerky, earth, and molasses.  The retrohale shows earthier notes of soy and mushroom.  In the second third, I get a transition that sees notes of cocoa that also remind me of Tootsie Rolls because of how sweet the smoke is.  The finish reminds me of wasabi spice and I am also getting plenty of espresso and a meatiness like a beef broth.  There is a mineral note as well, and the retro sees ginger and wasabi along with espresso and herbs that remind me of basil.  The smoke is still oily, but even thicker than it was.  Further in I get nuts and smokiness like peat, and orange syrup.  In the last third, I get sesame oil, minerals, charcoal, anise, and Melba Toast.  The retro is amazing and still shows signs of the orange syrup.  This thing has it all.  Nuance, layers of flavors, and enough boldness to satisfy anyone.

Pairing Notes: Birch beer.  Rye whiskey.  Rum.  Dates.  Raisins.  Chocolate-covered raisins.  Candied oranges.  Golden raisins.  White grape juice.  After a steak.  French fries with gravy.  Dark chocolate nibs.  Black coffee with sugar.

Perfect draw. Barnyard and mild hay. Sweetness on the cold draw. Oily smoke. Strong coffee flavor with a tingle in the retro. Great smoke output and a touch of something sweet. Very smooth with great flavor.

  3. Steven Block (verified owner)

Solid little stick. Mine lit right up and made a lot of thick juicy smoke. Nice spice with a tasty retrohale. Draw was a bit tight.
