Hendrik Kelner Jr. for Kelner Boutique Factory The 73

$18.00

No factory is as closely guarded as the Kelner Boutique Factory.  We are talking about a master blender who was groomed by the entire staff of the once legendary Davidoff Cigar Company.  Jr. grew up obviously with his father the head of tobacco growing for the brand, but also working under Eladio Diaz the master blender of over 30 years at the brand.  His sister grows tobacco.  His family is all tobacco people.  He also does not need the money.  He is educated, smart, and wants for nothing.  He literally does not want to be a big person in our industry.  He simply wants to have a very small factory, with a few coworkers and the daily experience of being a master blender/artist.  That’s it.  He does not care about being famous or rich.  He cares about family and being content.  Which is why he only produces around 250,000 cigars per year.  So you can see why his clients feel threatened that he works with Privada.  In fact some of them have even threatened him that if he works with us, they will not work with him.  But it did not work.  Hendrick does what he wants.  He is his own man.  Owned by no one.  So here is the 73.  His first release with PCC directly.  Named for the year of his birth.  Special.  Unique.  Exclusive.  Rare.  Privada.  Thank you Mr. Kelner for your hard work, dedication, passion, and loyalty.  You see Privada for what it really is.

Description

Body: Green apple or dried apple, fruit leather
Foot: Green or dried apple, fruit leather
Cold Draw: Cedar aging room notes and fruit leather

The first third opens with major floral notes reminiscent of magnolia.  Very strong.  The aging room cedar note is also right up front and beautiful.  Although the cigar is not aged, it certainly tastes like it is.  This is called ripe.  It is ready to smoke now.  There is a white pepper in the retro along with warm buttered toast and an explosion of spices that come from dried fruit fermentation.  It has the apricot flavor we all love so much but also a little Craisin on the tip of the tongue along with a sensation of drinking a fermented drink like kombucha or a not-so-carbonated ale.  Green apple, dried cedar, and billowy puffs of cotton-like smoke.

The second third opens with those fermented fruits, floral but less strong.  That fermented drink sensation on the palate, slight sesame seed flavor, and aged cedar.  The smoke got creamier and it leaves an apricot twang on the finish that is incredible!  That green apple is there too.  I’m floored at the flavors of this thing.

The final third sees the flavors condense and intensify.  The florals are back, like magnolia and the apricot is zinging my tongue along with the fresh-cut green apple.  The smoke texture is more syrup-like now and warmer on the mouth.  The cedar is more fresh cut as well, and the wood transitions to more root-like flavors.  The sensation is phenomenal and has heat from baker’s spice but no pepper, nor is it needed.  The retro is spicy with white pepper, earth, and oak.  Banger alert.

Pairing Notes: Fruit leather is a must.  Vanilla custard.  Lemon custard.  Fruit tart.  Green apple earlier in the day.  Bass pale ale.  Peach tea.  Dark espresso with sugar.  Pinot Grigio.  White wine.  White zinfandel.  Scotch from Lowlands.  Jack Daniels.  Anything with honey or raspberry or apricot beforehand.  Pear Schnapps.
