The Epernay line was released in 2009 by Illusione Cigars. The Epernay was blended to be a lighter version of the Illusione ~eccj~ and to be a perfect pairing for Champagne. The D’Aosta was released in 2019 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Epernay line. While still a Nicaraguan puro, the D’Aosta is a slightly different blend than the regular production Epernay. Dion Giolito found inspiration for the name while visiting family in Valle d’Aosta located in Northern Italy. He imagined that Zino Davidoff back in the day might have, on occasion, made the trip from Geneva to the Italian side of the Alpine-straddled border and enjoyed some of the wine that Aosta is famous for, the grapes for which Dion’s family still grows there. This medium-plus bodied smoke has notes of white pepper, sweet cream, woods, nuts, and orange marmalade. The D’Aosta is both reminiscent of champagne and indeed the perfect cigar to pair with when enjoying a fine champagne.
The Illusione Epernay 10th Anniversary D’Aosta is #7 on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2019.
