Jopito Gallo / Hendrik Kelner

5 x 50 / Robusto / 800 Made

The Jopito Gallo Indio was rolled by none other than Jopito's nephew, the son of legendary tobacco grower Hendrik Kelner, Hendrik Kelner Jr. at Kelner Boutique Factory in the Dominican Republic. Johanne, Jopito's son and Kendrik's loving cousin asked him the honor of making a cigar in his father's memory. Hendrik blended this cigar masterfully to elicit the nuances of Jopito's character, the tobaccos Jopito Kelner grew for their family and the tobaccos Jopito loved otherwise. For Hendrik, Jopito was a larger-than-life figure who helped bring success not only to the family of tobacco growers but to the country he so pridefully calls home, the Dominican Republic. Join us as we venture into the essence that was Jopito's life and the legacy he has left behind.

The blend is 30% Piloto Cubano, from Jacagua where Jopito had his farm and grew his own tobacco for more than 40 years. This tobacco is grown in the same place and by the same farmers that used to work with Jopito. It’s 30% Habano Vuelta Abajo Dominican filler, harvested at a friend’s farm in an area where Jopito had great influence, Villa González, Santiago, 20% Cameroon grown by the Meerapfel family, one of Jopito´s favorites, and 20% Broadleaf from the U.S., harvested in Connecticut. The wrapper is grown by Monica Kelner, Sister of Hendrik Kelner Jr. and niece of Jopito Kelner. At Cotui, her farm, she harvests this tobacco in an open sky style which adds incredible flavor. The binder comes from Monte Plata, also grown by the Kelner family. A tenacious family tradition!

1st Third

The first third of this exquisite cigar begins with beautiful dried cedar, ripened warm peaches baking in the sun, and the most peculiar fennel seed that gives off reminders of licorice and old-time root beer.

2nd Third

The second third of the Gallo sees flavors I can only describe as apple pie with the crust, dried Italian herbs like oregano, and freshly shaved cinnamon sticks on the finish and flavor.

Final Third

The final third has flavor notes of organic vanilla bean and aging room cedar enveloped by a most creamy smoke texture.
