How many people can say they not only have a Nicaraguan Puro, but an Esteli Puro?  And to go even further, a Karen Berger Puro?  All the tobaccos in this cigar were grown, fermented, blended and aged at Karen’s farm and factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.  The cigar was created in thought over two years ago.  We named the cigar, designed the band, and paid a deposit about 26 months ago.  The cigars were rolled and then aged at Berger’s factory in Esteli, where they sat for about a year and a half.  This cigar was then aged another 6 months in our warehouse using our cooler method.  If you do not know Karen’s story, go to our YouTube page and search for her video.  She started rolling cigars in this same factory when she was just a teenager.  Today, she owns the place.  She’s the widow of a very influential cigar man named Kiki Berger, who passed away a few years ago.  Don Kiki was a mentor to a lot of people in this industry.  I’m excited to share this cigar with you.  It is such a proud honor to have had your support long enough to not only show you my true intentions, which are finding us the best cigars in the world, but also making projects like this that would have never been made a reality otherwise.  Thank you.

Description

Body: A note of black tea.
Foot: Rich tobacco.
Cold Draw: The cold draw is where things get interesting.  Dried apricot, and dried apple. Love that.

Tasting Notes: In the first third, I get some of that rich dried apple, I also get apricot and black pepper.  The smoke is creamy and oaky, and as I smoke further I get a beautiful cinnamon finish.  Towards the second third, I start getting chocolate and hazelnut as well.  Off to a great start!  In the second third, the dried fruits are still at the forefront, but now I’m also getting lemongrass, dried herbs, more oak, and cream, and the pepper has become a white pepper.  In the final third, I get nutmeg, cinnamon, oak, freeze-dried strawberries, cream, black pepper, some adobo seasoning, and a tonka bean which is very close to a vanilla bean but a little more hazelnutty.  I’m so impressed with the flavors on this cigar.  This is true Nicaraguan tobacco.

Pairing Notes: Brisk iced tea.  Long Island iced tea.  Apple cigar.  Apple pie.  Dried peaches.  Aged cheddar.  Cabernet Sauvignon.  Strawberry tart.  Vanilla pudding.  Peaches and cream.  Vanilla soda.  Cognac or Armagnac.  Chimay beer.

I’ve found the cigar that gives my obsession with Olivas Melanio a run for the money. Actually enjoy this Retrohale more!

  2. Benjeman Meyer (verified owner)

Perfect draw. Smooth leathery wrapper that smells of light barnyard and hay. First few puffs i got dried apricot. I love that flavor! Chocolatey, earthy and very creamy. Slight tingle on the retro towards the beginning. Wavy burn at first that corrected itself. This cigar was very good! Up there with some of my favorites!
