So, I found out why Montenegro is so damn good. The Batista we had last year blew the industry away. People could not understand why and how it was so good. And so after some teeth pulling and a few dinners with the owners at the Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills, it became clear. Hector Luis Prieto. This is one of the best tobacco growers in Cuba to date. He not only helped set up the Montenegro farm (which is organic by the way; no pesticides) 8 years ago, he also brought all of his seeds from Cuba to plant initially. Google “Prieto” and read all about him. He shows up in Nicaragua twice a year to check on operations. He will first eat the soil. I’m not kidding. When they found the farm, he would walk around tasting the soil. This is how they know where to buy land. Incredible and crazy stuff here, people. This one cigar alone makes this month’s box worth the opportunity to smoke it. This is no Batista though, I must tell you. This is a bit zestier. Still has the same perfect construction for the most part, and similar flavors, but this one kicks a bit harder. That’s enough story, let’s smoke!

Body: Fig and rawhide.
Foot: Menthol and rawhide.
Cold Draw: Beef stock, rawhide dog bone, toasted sesame.
Tasting Notes: I can see this is a different cigar from the Batista. The first third is sweet agave nectar, rawhide, sesame oil, red pepper, sugarcane, an almost artificial sweetener, and red pepper oil. Almost jalapeño on the retro. Oily smoke like olive oil; reminds me of Chimichurri. Herbal, parsley, tree bark, which is really the rawhide, and a bit of menthol by way of mint leaf…also curry? On the second third: mint leaves, oil, agave, maple syrup, parsley, dried oregano, red and white pepper, floral perfume-like cherry blossom…maybe berry also? There’s a wagyu fatty meatiness, Korean BBQ, and sesame. The final third is white pepper, mint leaf, oil, cherry blossom, craisin, white chocolate, rawhide, raisin, and tamarind.
Pairing Notes: Over-proof rye bourbon. Mint tea with honey or agave 30 minutes prior. Fatty Steak. Salmon. Coffee, lite & sweet. Tootsie Rolls. Cinnamon rolls. Jamaican beef patty. Orange soda. Flan.

After I smoked this I read the tasting notes above and it jumped out at me – agave! A dark agave is what I get at first and this toasted sesame. Right on the money! One of the best I’ve smoked this year. Wish I could try the Batista. I think Montenegro might be “my” brand…

My single cigar came well hudified in a pack with three other cigars total. Wrapper, humidity, and performance was all there. A ok.
I had trouble tasting much of anything in this cigar. It is medium stregnth and light medium body. Again flavors not popping out after the first third just a decent performing basic cigar.
If this organic tobacco movement is to ever catch on this will not be the reason why.
Great price point for the robusto. It is an ok deal for the money though.
