We have all seen the influx of luxury cigar companies in this industry. I tend to stray away from most of them. Montenegro, however, is one that actually walks the walk. Nothing leaves their factory with less than 5 years of age. Most tobaccos are aged in excess of 7 years. Nothing NEEDS to be sold. This is what happens when two Beverly Hills investment strategists who love cigars buy a farm in Nicaragua. The farm is the only organic tobacco farm I actually know of. They do not use pesticides. This means smaller yields. They also hired famed Cuban tobacco farmer Hector Luis Prieto to run their farm and source their seeds. Not one cigar was sold for the first 7-8 years in business. They don’t really seem to care either. The two partners simply want to smoke the best and if the farm and factory break even they are very happy. The quality of the product comes before all else. Based on the feedback we have received on past Montenegro cigars in the club, I’d say it is. Privada members are the top of their client list, which says a lot about what we are doing together.
Tasting Notes: In the first third I am greeted by cocoa, cedar, faint red pepper and a very rich, creamy smoke. Further in I get nuances of charred oak and tart cherry juice. The age on this cigar is professional and balanced. We only received the cigars 2 months ago so it has been in a cedar aging room for 8.7 years! This is priceless and we are lucky to have it. With all the gimmicks out there, there is no way to cut corners on aging. That is valuable.
In the second third I get a chocolate note that reminds me of one of the best cigar candies, Riesen. The smoke gets chewier with white pepper, florals, cane syrup, cedar and a whole lot of wow.
In the final third I get a charred cedar, apricot, cocoa, florals, sweet cream and white pepper. There is nuance and depth, balance and subtlety. This is the kind of cigar that renews my faith in aging cigars more than 5 years.
Pairing Notes: Dark roast coffee with light sugar. Riesen Candy. M&M’s. Mexican hot chocolate. With red wine. With malted chocolate. Scotch. Brandy.
