Padilla. Unfiltered. Off kilter. Not always right, but certainly passionate. This is my take on Ernesto Padilla. Please form your own opinion of the man. You can get a great glimpse into who he is and what he believes by watching the interview we did of him on our YouTube channel. I use the term interview lightly because we basically just set him loose on camera. In the end, for me, he’s the relative you love but don’t always like. But one thing about him is not up for debate. He makes a GREAT cigar. For this installment, we see Ernesto back in the Raices Cubanas factory which is where we met him. Honduras, home to some of the best tobacco in the world. The cigar you are about to smoke is some of Padillas’ most flavorful work. There are notes in this cigar I found hard to translate into words. Prepare to experience Padilla, Catcher in the Rye. Description
Body: Brisk Iced Tea
Foot: Rich tobacco and sweet tea
Cold Draw: Leather, sweet tea, cedar, and dried fruits
Tasting notes: In the first third of the cigar, I get floral notes and charred cedar with a honey-like sweetness. Creamy smoke envelops the palate while tart dried fruits begin the finish. There is a satisfying umami that shows signs of black pepper and peat-like smokiness. There is a satisfying balance to each puff. Further down I get notes of oak, vanilla, and tangy fruits.
In the second third, I start to receive a warm sensation of baking spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and old spice. The rich cedar is still there along with creamy puffs of vanilla, charred oak, and what creates both the sensation and faint flavors of a peach pie filling.
In the final third, I get warm apple brandy, white pepper, cedar, slight sesame, sugar, cinnamon, and a beautiful wood that shifts between cedar and oak.
Pairing Notes: Apple brandy. Brandy. Peach tea. Brisk iced tea. Cognac. Churro. Caramel sundae. Dried strawberries. Peach pie.
