This tobacco may be stolen. I was recently in Nicaragua visiting my brother AJ Fernandez when we decided to drive around the town during a busy work day for AJ. We stumbled upon a part of town frequented by the workers of cigar factories all over Esteli. It was a Soccer field. Many men young and old alike were speaking to my friends from Nicaragua. They wanted to know what the gringo was doing in a locals only spot. My guide instructed them that I was el gringo puro, the one who loves cigars and we all quickly made friends. See the reason AJ and I became fast friends is because of the passion you and I share for cigars. He saw us and quickly realized that this is what people like him, the ones that really care, have been waiting for.

After some conversation some of the men told me and my friend that they worked for a large factory but have been creating their own Chinchalle (small factory). Now normally I would be a little weary of going anywhere in another country with people I just met but for starters they seemed cool. Second, this is what you pay me for. We went to a shut down restaurant that had about 6 rolling stations in it. It was dark and dreary but they had power and cerveza and they were proud to show me around. The man handed me the same damn CT Shade you are holding in your hand. I stepped into a makeshift aging room and saw thousands of them. We made a deal and history is made.

Description

Body: Rotting peaches, esters of fruit, manure.
Foot: Nuts and hay.
Cold Draw: Hay, Chex cereal… Lips burning.

Tasting Notes: Upon lighting, I’m met with the ingredients of pie crust, sugar, butter, and flour. I also get a very spicy black pepper, sometimes red pepper retro. Whipped cream and red pepper take the stage as toasted cereal and toasted nuts stay further in the background. Powdered sugar, barley, black pepper, and golden almond. JEEZ. Cedar, honey, hay, butter, crust, black pepper, cream.

In the second third, the sweetness comes to the forefront and the sweetness is like wet powdered sugar when it starts to condense. The cedar turns slightly piney. The spice is still black pepper, but mellows a bit. The baked crust is still there and boy oh boy, this cigar is savory. I also get a phantom flavor of Coconut Malibu Rum.

In the final third, the pie crust is still a dominant note. That golden flavor of honey and lightly roasted almond is there. Almost like Honeycombs cereal. The butter is still big! The black pepper is still present, but like in the second third, toned down. The smoke is creamy. At times I get hints of orange essence. Towards the end, there’s a syrup-like sweetness. The cedar is still in the mix and so is a golden, fried food. I just cannot get over how good this cigar is.

Pairing Notes: Peach pie, Honeycomb cereal, coffee, powdered sugar donuts, yellow cake, croissant, scotch, breakfast sausage, waffles, honey, orange tea, Blue Moon with an orange slice, butterscotch.
