The 200 Aged 6+ Years

About 6 years ago, Joya De Nicaragua produced this cigar for a friend of ours, someone you all know whose name I am not allowed to disclose due to contractual obligations. The cigars sat in a warehouse in Naples, FL for about 3 years and then shipped to us. We have been sitting on these since we moved into our new warehouse 3 years ago. I have to be honest, I did not like this cigar originally. I had been told about the amazing processes and tobaccos used in it, but again, I held them for another 2.5 years because I was not initially wowed. That is, until recently, when one Saturday morning I was perusing the warehouse to find something to smoke, I stumbled across the coolers. I noticed an aroma that was very peated, reminding me of Ardbeg Scotch when I opened them. I’m rarely wrong about how cigars will age, but I was wrong about this one! This cigar is a testament to professional aging and how much it can allow a cigar to develop when done correctly

Description

Wrapper: Sumatra /
Binder: Habano /
Fillers: Dominican, Nicaragua  and Honduras

Body: Florals, aged oak.
Foot: Peat and aged oak.
Cold Draw: Peated scotch.

Tasting Notes: The first third opens with aged oak, moss, peat, citrus, black tea, and cream. As it opens up, I get hit with powdered sugar as well as floral and dried fruits. Wow, after the first half-inch, the age begins to shine. It’s extremely balanced and nuanced and gone are any sharp details. This is the epitome of balance and for some reason, it reminds me of thick French toast with cinnamon and syrup. In that way, it is sweet, it has a thick rich creamy smoke, and it has cinnamon, wood, and slight hints of dried fruits. The second third is creamy and velvety and the woodiness is more of an aged cedar now. The cinnamon finish gets stronger with more heat and the dried fruits have become more like a baked apple. I still get an earthiness that is hard to describe and can only come from a cigar with this much age on it. It’s unique! I can see where some will love it and some may not, but what an experience getting to smoke something that was aged this professionally. In the final third the flavors are similar to dried, aged woods and baked fruit and the smoke is creamy with a tinge of cinnamon. The retrohale sees oak, white pepper and a bouquet of aged tobaccos and floral notes. This is AGE, my friends.

Pairing Notes: Orange Ceylon Tea. Black Tea with cream and honey, Scotch of all varieties, vanilla custard, dried orange slices, blue moon beer with orange slice, dried fruits
