Privada Storytelling
Costa Rica has always been one of the cigar world's best kept secrets.
Most cigar smokers know Nicaragua. Plenty know Honduras. Far fewer understand how much interesting tobacco has quietly passed through Costa Rica over the years.
This cigar comes from a factory that owns farmland, imports tobacco, rolls cigars, and has always done things its own way. Some of the cigars coming from there have been incredible. Others have missed the mark. That willingness to experiment is part of what makes the factory interesting.
Some of our favorite cigars have come from this operation, including the original Cuban Link and its follow up release. D'Crossier also spent time there before eventually moving production.
About six years ago, we gave them one simple request.
Make the best Cuban style Panatela possible.
The goal was to respect the Laguito No. 1 tradition while showing what Costa Rica could produce when nobody was paying attention.
They delivered.
The cigars went into our coolers and stayed there. Over the years we smoked them periodically and watched them change. Some cigars simply become older. Some become better.
These did both.
Today they are exactly where they need to be. Thin, elegant, flavorful, and mature. A reminder of why smaller ring gauges survived for generations before the cigar market became obsessed with bigger cigars.
Flavor Journey
The first third opens patiently before dark chocolate covered banana and chocolate covered cherry begin showing themselves. Cinnamon follows with a touch of cayenne that keeps the profile lively.
In the second third, Nutella moves to the center of the cigar. Black pepper, cream, and sweet woods develop around it while the retrohale brings a cabinet full of baking spices.
The final third combines salt, dried fruit, cayenne, aged cedar, and rich chocolate. Everything comes together into a balanced finish that feels mature without losing the personality that made the cigar interesting in the first place.
Why It Belongs in Privada
Flawless Costa Rica represents a side of the cigar world that does not receive enough attention.
It comes from a country capable of producing exceptional tobacco, a factory willing to experiment, and a traditional size that asks the tobacco to speak for itself.
Then we gave it six years.
There is no giant ring gauge hiding the blend. No need for unnecessary complexity. Just a long, thin Panatela built around flavor, maturity, and the belief that Costa Rica deserves a place in the conversation.
Production Notes
Flawless Costa Rica is produced by IMG in a 7 x 38 Laguito No. 1 / Panatela format.
The blend uses an A++ Ecuador Habano wrapper. The binder remains undisclosed, while the filler combines Costa Rican tobacco with Cuban seed tobacco grown in Costa Rica.
The finished cigars have received six years of aging.
Its smaller ring gauge keeps the wrapper involved throughout the smoke while allowing the chocolate, spice, cedar, and fruit characteristics to remain clearly defined.
