Tasting Notes: Barnyard, oats, and floral on the body. The foot is tea, barley, and violet. Cold draw is hay and cooling with faint apple cider, sweet woods, and fruits. The first puff reminds me of that dryer sheet floral thing I love so much. There’s a blast of black pepper in the retro and there are notes of honey, apple wood, salt, vanilla, and sugar. The body of this cigar is strong. It has a salty finish. Right now it’s a bit of a pepper bomb. Then vanilla ramps up and so do floral notes. Closer to the 2nd third the florals are still the main event with dry cedar wood, lighter pepper, and a fantastic zing on the palate. In the 2nd third, I get confectioner’s sugar, cinnamon, and toast. Brings to mind cinnamon toast crunch cereal. Wood, vanilla, white pepper, and citrus now enter the mix. There’s also a quick finish of cinnamon. In the final third, I am met with yet another transition to sandalwood and incense. I still get the powdered sugar and vanilla thing too. It’s getting charred and sugary now as it comes to a close when I am met with herbal green tea notes and some black pepper to finish it out.
Pairing Notes: Light roasted coffee with cream and sugar. A powdered donut. Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Dried berries. Honey. Wheat bourbon. Wheat beer. Cream soda. Whipped cream.
Crux Epicure is a cigar we had well over a year ago in a Salomon shape. It was an instant classic, making top 10 and top 25 lists everywhere. It had a personal impact on me as well. A Connecticut shade perfection of a blend. Now this is not your father’s CT shade. This is a new-world blend of Nicaraguan tobacco under one of the more expensive and flawless Connecticut wrappers. It’s rolled by the Plasencia family in Nicaragua under the careful eye of the good folks at Crux. Crux is a brand built by a Minneapolis native who, with the help of his partner (also an experienced tobacconist) is making what they believe to be the finest cigars available and out of one of the finest farms in the game. While all things in cigars are subjective, this cigar being absolutely amazing is not. Get ready for the journey of a modern-day CT shade in a size made only for Privada! You will not find this anywhere else.
