This industry has some magicians, some wizards, and some warlocks. Santana of D’Crossier is a wizard. Born in Cuba and thoroughly in tune with the motherland, Santana has a knack for making the cigars the cigar makers love most. Ask anyone in South Florida who blends cigars, and they will tell you Santana made the best cigars until a few years ago when he went underground. The man only talks tobacco. He knows each manufacturer’s fermenting process, blending process, growing process, and as importantly their aging process. He’s intense. He dreams of returning to a freed Cuba someday and continuing in the tobacco business as if nothing had happened. I sure hope that dream comes true. He can get any type of tobacco as well. ANY. So here we have a testament to what he is capable of in the Dominican Republic. This man creates. He does not market. He blends, he creates the art, and that is it. The cigars will sell themselves if they are good enough. That is his take on it. Most of the time, it works. Other times there are issues. Relationships may sever. Cigars may sit in factories. But at some point, they have to go. These are some fine Dominican cigars aged professionally in cedar. This will be a great education on how cedar affects a cigar. You will taste the actual wood in this cigar. Not hints of it, or something that reminds you of cedar, but actual cedar. And from here on out you will know it when you taste it and you will know if you like it or not. This is all part of the Privada journey. If you enjoy this cigar, tag us on social media and I’ll show him. If you don’t enjoy it, keep it to yourself because if he sees a complaint he’s liable to never call me again…and we need more from this man!!

Description

Tasting Notes: Very pungent manure, sour mulch, and vinegar off the body. Off the foot, I get a musty wood, dried fruit, and leather. Lots of musty notes of earth, oak, and baking spices on the cold draw. Amazing flavors in the first third. Sweet French toast, roasted pecan, fresh-brewed morning coffee, cedar, nutmeg, cinnamon, dry cocoa, lime zest, and white pepper. Hot damn! The retrohale bolsters the draw wonderfully with aromas of cinnamon sugar, toast, rich caramel, pecan, banana bread, allspice, and white pepper. That banana bread aroma starts to find its way into the draw as the second third begins, along with a moist spice cake, more ground cinnamon, aromatic cedar, buttered rum, and a lovely toasty nuttiness that rounds out the finish perfectly. My palate is left feeling thoroughly refreshed with each puff, everything is just so balanced and clean! There is a general aromatic musty character enveloping all the notes, indicative of very mature, well-aged tobacco in the blend. The final third begins with what reminds me of a caramel topped cinnamon roll. Also getting a nice round oak note, a little salt, phantom citrus notes, hazelnut, coffee bean, charcoal, warm butter, and some minerality. The retrohale has an uptick of cedar and a delicious caramel drizzle right at the end too. This thing was magnificent from start to finish on every level. Absolute fire!

Pairing Notes: Pecan pie, rum of all kinds, Snickers 1 hour before, porter beers, Teakeepers sweetened chocolate and licorice tea, chocolate covered cherries, fruit cake, red velvet cake, carrot cake, Chinese food.

This is one outstanding cigar. Upon light up you are greeted with a rich mocha, coco like flavors that linger for just the right amount of time. Super clean, the flavors of the first third deliver in spades. The second third brings more of a woody component with slight earthy flavors, add to that a touch of cinnamon to keep things interesting. Smooth as can be this cigar is on a flavor cruise control. The final third allows this cigar to increase in strength and intensity, so smooth and complex this cigar is not a nicotine bomb. The flavors continue to deliver with a satisfying cool smoke to the nub. Flavorful, complex and satisfying, I may just light up another. This cigar is super highly recommended!

  5. Adam Santoro (verified owner)

I felt like the Big Beaver who smoked a 2×4. This is a wood delivery system, a portal to the inside of a tree. I kept thinking about furniture, not the modern kind, from a time where wood was the feature not merely structural uphold a facade.
This stick is specific yet covertly complex.
    Worth a try.
