Privada Storytelling
Some cigars are made to be released.
Others need time to become what they were always meant to be.
Nutshell is one of those cigars.
The name comes from Layne Staley's voice, a voice that could make silence feel heavy, wounded, and true.
In 2018, Brian rode a scooter through Estelí, Nicaragua, to visit AJ Fernandez. Along the way, he wanted to see everything up close.
That curiosity led him to a tiny revolutionary micro factory called Tabacalera Domingo Gadea.
Roughly 1,800 square feet.
Seven rollers.
A small operation where everyone felt like family.
They handed him a cigar that smelled strangely like a bakery. Its wrapper was a mysterious B leaf that would have made any large factory uncomfortable.
At the time, the cigar was wrapped in a lighter leaf. Years later, that wrapper had turned a rich chocolate brown.
Brian imported a few thousand cigars, and eventually the factory drifted away.
But the cigars remained.
Eight years passed in coolers.
What emerged was something that could never have been rushed.
A cigar with the richness of chocolate, the sweetness of amaretto, and a tenderness that only time could create.
Nutshell is unapologetic, deeply aged, and entirely its own.
Because good things take time.
Flavor Journey
The experience begins before the cigar is even lit.
The pre-light aroma brings amaretto and warm bakery sugar, while the cold draw delivers a full expression of amaretto. The body settles into medium-plus territory with a syrupy mouthfeel and gentle spice.
The first third opens with amaretto up front, followed by white pepper and rich, sweet syrup notes. The sweetness is pronounced without overwhelming the tobacco, creating a warm, dessert-like introduction.
In the second third, the profile deepens into Hershey's chocolate syrup and Nutella-like hazelnut richness. A soft red pepper lift brings contrast, keeping the sweetness balanced as the cigar develops.
The final third becomes a chocolate bomb.
Toasted hazelnut, rich cocoa sweetness, and lingering warm spice come together in a satisfying finish.
The draw remains firm yet rewarding, delivering a deeply matured smoking experience from beginning to end.
Why It Belongs in Privada
Nutshell represents something that has always been important to Privada.
Finding cigars that others might overlook.
Not every remarkable cigar comes from a famous factory or carries a recognizable name.
Sometimes it comes from a tiny room in Nicaragua, where seven rollers work together and an unusual wrapper tells a story no large manufacturer would expect.
This cigar was never about perfect appearances.
Its mysterious B leaf wrapper, unconventional origins, and years spent aging make it different from cigars designed for immediate release.
Eight years transformed what was already a memorable discovery into something much deeper.
The original factory may have drifted away, but its work survived.
Nutshell is a Privada exclusive because it represents the kind of discovery that cannot simply be recreated.
A cigar found through curiosity, preserved through patience, and finally shared when the time was right.
Production Notes
Produced by Tabacalera Domingo Gadea in Estelí, Nicaragua.
Nutshell is a 7 x 50 Churchill constructed with a Jalapa Habano wrapper, Jalapa Viso binder, and filler tobaccos from Estelí and Condega.
The cigars were originally discovered in 2018 and spent eight years aging in coolers before release.
During that time, the wrapper developed from a lighter appearance into a rich chocolate brown, while the tobacco matured into a smooth, sweet, and complex smoking experience.
The finished cigar delivers a medium-plus-bodied profile built around amaretto, chocolate, hazelnut, syrupy sweetness, and gentle spice.
The result is an exceptionally aged Privada exclusive with a character that only time could produce.
